The Story of Sparrow Song & Dance: Where Imagination, Expression, and Growth Take Flight
Our Story
Sparrow Song & Dance was founded by Renee Newman and Malaika Newman-Vassighi, a mother-daughter duo with deep roots in musical theater and a shared passion for creative education. Together, they’ve combined decades of stage experience and teaching expertise to create a mobile performing arts program that nurtures children not just as performers — but as whole, expressive, confident individuals.
Their journey began with a shared belief: that every child deserves access to high-quality arts education in a space where they feel safe, inspired, and seen. Whether it’s a daycare, school, or recreation center, Sparrow brings the joy of music, dance, and theater directly to communities throughout DC, Maryland, and Virginia.
Our Teaching Philosophy
At Sparrow, we train all of our instructors and interns to follow a unique, emotionally responsive teaching approach shaped by Renee’s experience in special education. Every class is designed to:
-
Meet children where they are developmentally and emotionally
-
Help them become more aware of their feelings and how emotions influence performance
-
Build the confidence to take creative risks in a safe, supportive setting
-
Teach proper technique and performance discipline while challenging each child to rise to their full potential
We focus on individual growth with excellence in mind — not comparing students to one another, but helping each child apply what they’ve learned and push beyond their comfort zone. We don’t just encourage self-expression; we teach the skills that make that expression powerful, polished, and stage-ready.
